There is a big difference from one size to the next.
The medium and small sizes are bigger than you'd think.
Take your dog's build into account when ordering.
Here are some tips to help you pick the right size pack for your dog:
- A 6-month-old miniature Dachshund would take an XXS.
- A 6-month-old Italian Greyhound would take an XS.
- An 8-kilo Lhasa Apso or 16-kilo Sheltie would wear a Small pack.
- A 25kg Lab or typical Dalmatian would wear a Medium, though a slim Dalmatian would be better in a Small.
An adult Golden would wear a Large.

Burn Off Your Dog's Pent-Up Energy with a Backpack
Pent-up energy can result in undesirable behaviour such as destructive chewing, barking, aggression, jumping at people or doors, or running in circles. To manage high-energy dogs, put a backpack on the dog and fill it with something. For some dogs, the feeling of being "wrapped" in the backpack has a calming effect; these dogs do not require a breaking-in period to get used to it. However, if you feel your dog needs to get used to it, walk him or her first in the empty backpack.
Cesar Milan puts equal weights in each side of the backpack (a bottle of water, can of soda, jar of pickles, or whatever is appropriate to the dog's size). He lets the dog carry the load on a regular walk. For many dogs, this gives the dog a sense of purpose. It also helps them burn off pent-up energy in a constructive and physically active way.
Begin with short walks and watch your dog for signs of fatigue to be sure you're not overloading the backpack with weight.
If you’re heading out to the bush or hiking along the sea-front, take along the Sierra Dog Waterproof Backpack.
The expandable packs have a more ergonomic and comfortable fit around the dog’s shoulder to help fight fatigue.
The packs are water and stain resistant, with wide mouth openings and inner compartments and reflective trim.
This back pack for dogs by Sierra Dog Supply was designed by hikers whose dogs are part of their family.
It's one of the best fitting dog backpacks available.
Chest pads under the front straps and the ergonomic fit around the shoulder help fight fatigue, and the wide back pad spreads the weight across the dog's back.
Is your dog out of control?
Does your high-energy dog exhibit nervous energy by running in circles, chewing down the house or picking fights with other dogs?
The "Dog Whisperer", Cesar Milan, recommends daily walks, and for high-energy dogs, he recommends a backpack to add weight and triple the benefit of your walk.
