The poodle - an outstanding intelligent dog

Behind the Poodle’s distinguished appearance lies a lively, curious soul, with rare intellectual capacities.
Capable of adapting to all kinds of situations, easy to train, they can even save their owners’ lives - because the Poodle has the unusal ability of being able to learn how to detect the early warning signs of an epileptic seizure.

A multi-facetted French breed

Toy, Miniature, Standard or Giant, the Poodle is always wellproportioned.
The curly coat which distinguishes the Poodle is abundant and pleasant to touch.
A popular form of grooming is to shave certain areas completely.

Unrivalled life expectancy
The Poodle’s average life expectancy is estimated between 12 and 15 years for the smaller sizes.
In the Poodle, the signs of ageing do not apear until around 10 or 11 years old.
However, to preserve their cognitive faculties for as long as possible, a specially adapted diet is essential.

A very individual coat
The woolly appearance of the Poodle’s coat is due to its structure
80% of the coat consists of secondary hairs, which are very fine and light, like those of a puppy.
Because they grow continually and the coat retains water, regular clipping is necessary.

Risk of cataracts with age
A principal sign of ageing in the Poodle, a cataract is the degeneration of the lens which affects the vision.
It is seen as a grey-blue film over the eye.

About Royal Canin

Royal Canin, established in 1967 in Aimargues, the South of France, was founded by veterinarian Dr Jean Cathery.

Dr Cathery first began producing dog food in order to cure recurrent eczema in dogs; he maintained a belief that certain conditions occurred through an adverse reaction to food consumed by the animal.

The global success of this revolutionary food drives Royal Canin to progressively develop the means of high tech production, equipping itself with superb Research & Development capabilities and extending its knowledge to cat food.

Ever since its beginnings, Royal Canin has continuously achieved major global breakthroughs in dog and cat nutrition.

In 1980, Royal Canin was the first company in the world to launch a food design for the growth needs of large breed puppies. It was this world ‘first’ which made possible, 17 years later in 1997, the launch of Size Health Nutrition, the first ever program to take into account the true nutritional needs of dogs of small, medium and large sizes (MINI, MEDIUM, MAXI program).

This nutritional breakthrough enabled the establishment of another world first - the four major parameters of Heath Nutrition:
  • Age,
  • Activity,
  • Physiological State and
  • Size/Breed
These four parameters have evolved to become a standard approach across the other world players in the dog and cat food markets.

Royal Canin always goes further and further in the pursuit of knowledge and innovation and today establishes the basis of a new approach to Health Nutrition with food targeted to fulfill physiological, dietetic needs to specific breeds.

Thanks to the irreplaceable expertise of the breeders and veterinarians, Royal Canin has continued to launch increasingly precise and targeted foods.

Remaining faithful to its philosophy of Lean Production, Royal Canin has concentrated all its business activities on the same site in Aimargues, France. The Royal Canin Campus opened in 2001, bringing together all the sources of knowledge of dogs and cats, the real clients of the business. With an area of 24 hectares, the Campus accommodates all the vital functions of the company: the plant,  analysis laboratory,  Research and Development facility, kennels and a cattery.

After a year or planning and collaboration between Veterinarians, Dog Technicians and Cat Technicians the design of the Royal Canin kennel/cattery was achieved. This unique facility accommodates 130 dogs from 20 different breeds and 120 cats from 15 different breeds. They are looked after by animal keepers who are devoted to them.

The animals' wellbeing is ensured by a specially designed environment: pens, watering holes, games and music in the boxes. At the Royal Canin Campus, there is strictly no invasive animal testing conducted. The only studies performed involving the animals are palatability and digestibility trials. For palatability trials the animal makes a "blind test" as it chooses between two foods. Rest periods (one to three weeks) systematically alternate with these testing periods to determine the digestibility of our foods this process involves examination of the canine and feline faeces.

The laboratory carries out all in-depth studies on the food itself, such as analysing proteins, fats and carbohydrates levels etc.  First, it validates and approves the suppliers; it provides support to the plant laboratories, validating the proper quality of the raw materials received. It analyses the products coming out of the pilot station with a view to further improving the quality of its food products.
